I recall this wonderful old Nottingham
Pub from about 1969. I was 17 and Nottingham had quite a lively gay scene
unlike Leicester. It was before the days of Nottinhams gay clubs and car
loads would travel over from Leicester on I think Tuesday night meet in the
White Horse Parliament Square. Have a pint in there and then on to the
Roebuck which had a regular disco upstairs. At the time it was the roughest
pub I had ever been in so was a bit of an adventure for a teenager. There
were all sorts of dodgy looking charictors in there with facial scars,
tattoos etc. I recall going to the old white tiled outside gents worrying if
I would be safe. A drag queen followed a "rough" in, he lifted up his skirt,
and had a pee, I was worried there might be trouble. The drag queen said
"hello darling" to the "rough", who replied "i'm alreet Fred, how ya doing"?
I never saw any trouble there.
I realised that there was a special relationship between the different
working class sections of Nottingham, people tolerated each other and
accepted that we were all different in our own ways. Life was too hard for
many in that area.
Later the big clubs opened in Nottinham so we drifted away from the Roebuck.
But I will never forget those nights. It was fun and exciting. Not like
boring Leicester. It was a special place where the unlikeliest people
crossed paths. I wish I could go back one more time! |
