Stag & Pheasant

Date of photo: 1991

The Stag & Pheasant was situated on Lower Parliament Street. This unaltered Home Ales tied house closed in 2000 and demolished to make way for area redevelopment.
In 1951 it was run by Ernest John Perry & his wife, my Aunt, Olive Annie Perry (nee Miller). They were there for a number of years before moving to Wimbledon, where they ran an Off Licence. I remember as a toddler, when we visited them with my parents, Uncle Ernest always took me behind the bar & gave me a tot of beer in a tiny glass. When you entered the pub by the main entrance, you was confronted by a wide staircase which led to their private quarters & I can still smell the aroma of percolated coffee. It was a fabulous pub both inside & out & although a Grade 11 listed building, it was demolished in 2000 to make way for area redevelopment.
