The Stag & Pheasant was
situated on Lower Parliament Street. This unaltered Home Ales tied house closed in
2000 and demolished to make way for area redevelopment. |
|
In 1951 it was run by Ernest John Perry
& his wife, my Aunt, Olive Annie Perry (nee Miller). They were there for a
number of years before moving to Wimbledon, where they ran an Off Licence. I
remember as a toddler, when we visited them with my parents, Uncle Ernest
always took me behind the bar & gave me a tot of beer in a tiny glass. When
you entered the pub by the main entrance, you was confronted by a wide
staircase which led to their private quarters & I can still smell the aroma
of percolated coffee. It was a fabulous pub both inside & out & although a
Grade 11 listed building, it was demolished in 2000 to make way for area
redevelopment. |
