The Hero Of Waterloo was situated on Hutchinson Street. This pub has now been demolished.
My grandfather,Richard Curtis, was the landlord of the Hero of Waterloo, Hutchinson Street, Nottingham,in the 1940’s and early 1950’s.I remember the bar,the sitting room at the back of the bar, and the yard very clearly,as played in them as a child when visiting my grandfather. The Airedale dog ,Sherry, lived in the back yard where his job was to prevent children stealing empty beer bottles from the crates, and then taking them to the front door of the pub and claiming a penny per bottle. My grandfather fought in World War 1 and I don’t know when he first became landlord of The Hero of Waterloo. lt was probably in the 1920’s as I believe my father lived there as a child. After my grandfather retired, he continued to live at the pub ,which was managed by Madge and Louis Johnson who I remember well.My mother and I both loved Mrs Joins, the cleaning lady, and visited her whenever we visited Nottingham, for many years after my grandfathers death.
