The Barley Mow was situated at 60 Basford Road.
This pub has now been converted into offices. Publican in 1851 was Samuel
Stapleton. |

My grand father George Thorpe was the
landlord there upto his death in 1900 or 1901. I don't know when he moved in
to the premises. His partner, my grandmother, as we would now call her
nowadays was Emma Day who originated from Cambridgeshire. They had three
children. My auntie Ivy - born 1892. My father also George Thorpe - born
1895 and my younger aunt Minnie Thorpe born 1897. I visited the venue in the
1980's and spoke to the landlady. She wasn't able to say much other than
between the time my grandfather was there and the 1980's there had been 3
substantial fires and consequent rebuilding. My father never said anything
to me about the fires so I can only assume they were before the 1950's when
I was a youngster. The pub was what we would nowadays call a micro brewary
as my grandfather used to do his own brewing. I think that was quite the
norm in those day's. I'm away from home at the moment but at home I have the
recipe / instruction book with notes that my grandfather used along with the
hydrometer kit used for the brewing process. A story my youngest aunt told
me was that one day my grandparents had to call in a doctor in as my eldest
aunt who would have been 6 or 7 at the time was found unconcious. It was
subsequently discovered that by opening the draws in the bar she was able to
climb up and help herself to the gin bottles. My father - born in the pub
never drank a pint of ale in his life. He said he couldn't stand the smell
of it. He would however drink cider, wines and spirits but all in
moderation. |
