The Black Lion was situated on the old
Great North Road. This grade-II listed
pub was originally known as The Scarthing Moor Inn and is now used as a
farmhouse. |

Farmhouse. C18 with large early C19
addition. Formerly the Black Lion Inn. Brick, rendered, with hipped and
gabled slate roof. Stone plinth, rebated eaves, 4 roof stacks. 3 storeys, 2
bays, square plan with rear wing. South front has central C19 square
columned porch with antae and parapet, containing half glazed door, flanked
by unequally spaced single glazing bar sashes. Above, blocked opening and 2
glazing bar sashes. Above again, a blocked opening and a glazing bar sash.
To right, rear addition, brick with slate roof, has large stepped gable to
west with stone coping. To west, single plain sash. West front has central
plain sash flanked by single glazing bar sashes with timber lintels. Above,
3 glazing bar sashes on each floor. North front has, to left, round headed
door with fanlight, flanked by single glazing bar sashes. To right, C20 door
and to its right, single glazing bar sash. Above, 3 glazing bar sashes.
Above again, 2 glazing bar sashes and a blocked opening. Rear wing, to north
east, has to north a glazing bar sash. To south, a glazing bar sash and to
right, door, both with segmental heads. Rear elevation has 2 glazing bar
sashes of different sizes, and above, 2 glazing bar sashes on each floor. To
right, adjoining boundary wall with ramped coping and toilet block, single
storey, 2 bays, with to west, single unglazed opening and to south, door.
Adjoining store, brick with coped gables and wall, has to south, door with
timber lintel and to right, a small light. Interior has central entrance
hall with early C19 3 storey open well staircase with landings, square
newels, stick balusters, and double scrolled ramped handrail. Several early
C19 hob grates, one with Adam style decoration. Mid C19 painted slate
