Commanding the slope of Garsington Hill overlooking Oxford it has a huge splendid and uneven (see below) lawn behind it. Log fire and plaque "Oxford Mail Pub of the Year 1982). Warm, comfortable and the Public Bar is scarcely any less cosy than the Lounge Bar to the SE of it. Unfortunately the Penny Black has been replaced by guest ales, currently Greene King Abbot. When you investigate the Gents (they are in an annexe outside), you see all of Oxford. Goodness knows what Matthew Arnold was thinking about when he raved about Boar's Hill: this is the place to go to see the city. Magnificent apple pies, and if your mobile phone goes off at the bar, you have to buy everyone a drink.
