A E Hobbs

The A E Hobbs was situated on Valley
Road. This pub closed in the 1990s and has now been demolished with houses
built on the site. A E Hobbs was an architect for the brewers, Brakspears,
and designed many of their pubs. |

AE Hobbs was a very successful angler,
landing some very large fish (record sizes), as well as writing books about
fishing. The pub had a number of these fish stuffed in cases in the main
bar, along with small plaques explaining their significance. The pub
certainly celebrated his fishing rather than pub design. |

This pub was extremely popular, often referred
to as “ The Hobbs”. Among those who attended were members of the Henley Town
Band, who met at Gilletts school music room. It was a great place to
socialise and to recharge the Band Members who played at many charitable
functions on the River Meadow, the local private school and villages around
Henley. Many happy memories and hours of mirth. |
