The Quarry Gate was situated on Wharton Road.
This pub opened in 1937 and closed in 2013. |
|
I well remember this pub from the 1940s
to the late 1950s when my family moved away from Wharton Road. I believe
that the landlord in those days was Bill Jewell and my recollection was of
being sent over to the “Jug and Bottle” to get packets of crisps. As a small
boy it was an adventure to ring the bell on the hatch and when it opened to
see the bar and smell the beer and cigarettes. It was the first pub that I
ever looked into (but not the last!) and I still retain the image in my
mind. |

Review from tantallon.org.uk: |
Courage Best £1.60
Gin and Tonic £2.03
Comfortable Screw (cocktail involving Southern Comfort) £1.80
Black Russian £2.50
Gin sling £1.25
Jug of Jellybean £8.00 (18.iv.1998)
Two bars, a deathly-quiet lounge approached from the Oxford end, and a
public bar approached from the Headington end, which is rather busier, but
on a Saturday night turns into a carpeted version of a deserted college bop.
Quite plush, but only one ale on cask, which is Courage Best. This is in
stark contrast to the huge range of cocktails available, which I can't
comment on yet. This might be worth another visit or something. |

Used to come in here at 14 with my
dad on a sunday at 12, have a coke and play bar billiards. Gordon and
Jean were the landlords then. Used as a local from 82 and remember
queuing outside every night at 6 waiting for it to open. Worked behind
the bar in about 84 for a year for the landlords Brian and Sue Davies. I
also started the Quarry Gate football team in about 85 |
