The Union was situated at 1 Union
Street (now Hart Street). This beerhouse was present by 1841 when the
publican was William Belcher. It has now been demolished with a primary
school built on the site. Between 1907 and 1911 the publican was Elizabeth
Robinson. Elizabeth M ay Robinson was born c1861 in Barbados, West Indies,
to Thomas and Elizabeth Powell. Her father was a Sergeant in the Oxford
Militia. In 1871 the family lived in Magdalen Road, Cowley and by 1881 they
had moved to the Old Dog Tray in
Gloucester- street where her father was the Licensed Victualler and
Elizabeth worked as a barmaid. Elizabeth married Frank White Robinson in
July 1881, but by 1891 she was a widow with a son, Francis, aged 4, and was
living in her father’s pub, The Perch at Binsey. She lived here until about
1907 when she moved to the Union at 1 Union Street, Jericho. |
