The Chequers Inn was situated at
113-115 High Street. This pub was present by 1630 and closed in 1910.
The Chequers Inn occupied all three buildings in the photo below, it
gradually reduced until only the right most building with the dormers
remained when it closed in 1910. The two left hand buildings were used as
retail and a bakery at various points. All Soul’s College Oxford owned the
land from at least 1593. In 1809 it was sold to Mark and James Morrell,
brewers “Morrell’s”. When Halls Oxford Brewer purchased
most Wheatley pubs in 1907 this one seems to have missed out and been
quickly sold out of the trade. |
