Fox & Hounds

The Fox & Hounds was situated on the High Street.
My wife Ann and I called in en route to Ludlow one lunchtime in high summer. The bar was a delight – an untouched throwback to the 19th century. I remember ringing the bell on the bar counter and, in the rather lengthy interlude before anyone responded, admiring a splendid oil painting, titled The Empress of Blandings, hanging on one of the walls. Eventually, from a door at the rear of the bar servery, an interesting looking cove slowly emerged, from whom I ordered a pint and a half pint of the Dasher’s Draught. The i. l. c. slowly egressed through the back door and left us to admire the antique furniture and artefacts in the bar parlour. There was then a long pause in the proceedings. After about 10 minutes I rang the bell again. Pause. No response. I rang again. Still no response. Pause - this was beginning to resemble a Pinter play. I rang again and just as we were on the point of leaving, a harassed looking female materialized from the rear door. I related to her the scenario so far. She rolled her eyes ceilingward and, telling us that this was only what was to be expected from D.D., pulled the pint and a half with a resigned sigh.
We drank slowly and, with the ale, absorbed the delights to be enjoyed in an English pub in the English countryside. Arcady!
‘Dasher’ was a nickname bestowed ironically in the air force in which he served before he retired to run the Fox & Hounds.

From the 1991 Good Beer Guide:
Brew pub in small village in the heart of the Shropshire countryside. Skittle alley at the rear of the pub is for hire. Brewery can be viewed through window at back. Occasional guest beers.’

Paul Wagner 1980 I read Tony Gray's entry about the Fox and Hounds with interest. I was friends with Dasher's son John and was visiting from the states in November of 1980. I spent a few days with John brewing the beer behind the pub. I have pictures of the process and wrote it down in my diary. I lost touch with John many years ago and would love to find him again. If anyone knows where John is and can put me in touch I would love it.
