Portman Arms

The Portman Arms was situated on the
A37. It was originally Portman House, a home for one of the local estate
managers but by some point in the 19th Century it had been converted into a
Hotel which no doubt took its trade from the neighbouring railway station.
Until the 1960's Pylle stood on the Somerset & Dorset Railway firstly as a
small country station, later downgraded to a halt. With the decline in
passenger traffic the Portman hotel was rebranded the Portman Arms. The
railway closed in 1966. The pub remained open until c2008. |
