The Black Smock Inn closed in 2003 and is now
used as a private house. The pub had a skittle alley (the low white building
on the left of the above photo). |

Fishing holiday , 1965 , 8 of us
pitching our tents near the Huntspill River. We were mainly from Wellington
Shropshire.
I remember that along with the landlord ,his daughter also ran the pub. Each
night we entertained the locals with our game of Tippit. where 2 teams hid
their fists before bringing them onto a table top for the opponents to work
out where a token was hidden. We always ended the night with singing.Aptly
named the Black Smock it was very eerie walking from the Pub back to our
tents in the early hours in such a remote location. One night the local bobby
who had been with us in our after hours sessions, said Watch out tonight
lads, the Sergeant is in the area. When we called one morning to say goodbye
,the landlords daughter told us that her father had suffered a heart attack |

I was a member of the Ancient Men, a
Morris dancing side with links to Oxford University, and we held our annual
camp a short way from the Black Smock (wherever it was!) in the summer of
1959. My most noteworthy memory of it was that they served a lethal scrumpy
for the princely sum of nine old pence to the pint (at the time when beer
was at least a shiling a pint). From our base we cycled out each day to
perform the Morris in towns and villages including Bridgwater and Ilminster
and no doubt other places which I have forgotten. Happy Days! |
