The Guss & Crook was situated on South
Road. This pub closed in 2013.
A guss or gus was a length of rope fastened around the waist of a young boy
which was itself attached to a chain and crook, which pulled along a cart in
coal seams which were too short in height for pit ponies to operate. The pub
was originally known as The New Inn. |
