The Green Man was situated on New Street. This
pub closed c1964 and was the local pub for the Fire Brigade staff. |

My 2GGF, Charles Wheldon, was the
landlord of the Green Man. The records show he was the victualler/landlord
from 1870 to 1873. The Inn and surrounding building went up for sale in
march of 1873. The surrounding buildings included. A brewery, storeroom,
tunhouses, stables, covered bowling alley, yard and other conveniences
belonging to the owner. Two rented cottages are included with the provision
not to evict the current occupiers. |

I used to use the Green Man from around 1962
when Eric Peace was landlord. Memory of police arriving late one night when
noticeably underage drinkers were there. Eric's comment 'These lads need
their beer' and police left! Great memories. |
