The Swan Inn was situated at the junction of Bearwood Hill Road and Ashby
Road. The name of the pub derived from the first letters of the villages of
Stapenhill, Winshill, Ashby and Newton Solney, each of which can be found by
taking one of the roads leading from it. It was originally a Bass Pub with a
huge Bass sign on the roof, it was then sold to Hardy & Hansons and the sign
was replaced with a Kimberley Ales sign. Closed c2009. Publican in
1901 was William Worthington. |

This pub was a regular haunt of the large Customs and Excise staffs posted
in Burton in the 1970's and eatly 1980's. The Swan was generally used for
special occasions because we had to drive to it. |
