The Castle Hotel was situated at 22 High Street. |

A historic coaching inn, latterly owned by the
then Trust House Hotels, it was considered uneconomic to upgrade to modern
requirements. It was bought by Tesco who wanted a High Street presence, and
planning permission was gained in the face of considerable opposition for
conversion to a supermarket, with only the façade being retained.
Subsequently Tesco sought bigger and more accessible premises, built a new
out of town store, and sold the Castle Hotel site which is now a low cost
retail outlet. |
