Hangmans Tree |
|
|
The Hangmans Tree was situated at 143 Oakham
Road. It has now been demolished, to be replaced with residential units. |
|
Large ‘estate’ pub, built around 1960. I
remember it as it was the Friday night haunt for local 6th formers in the
early 1970’s.
Supposedly named after the ‘Dudley Hangman’ who I believed lived in a nearby
cottage (years earlier!) although there were some suspiciously large trees
around the pub! area.
It was also the place my husband chose to propose to me in 1976. |

Pub opened in approximately 1960, the
landlord was Mr George Oakley, is wife was Emmy. The bar man on the opening
night was Sid Brown who was asked to help out and remained there for a few
years. |
