The Railway Tavern was situated on
Station Road. |

This beerhouse first opened in 1861 coinciding
with the laying down of the nearby railway station which was opened up from
Yarmouth to Ipswich in 1859.
I went there as a trainee Weights and Measures Inspector in the very early
70's. One of our duties was to test all spirits optics and check that the
beer glasses being used in the pub were correctly stamped as being accurate.
We went in, introduced ourselves and said we wanted to test the optics.
There was an outburst of hilarity. We were told this was a Beer House. No
spirits allowed.
That was my one and only visit to a beer house. It closed in abt 1973.
The door was to the left of the gable end next to the railway line. The
right hand side of the picture as you see it
A small bar area with no more than a dozen seats and an old wooden bar
sideways across the building.
It is now a dog kennels and can be seen clearly from the station. |
