Jolly Butchers

The Jolly Butchers was situated at 18 Oxford Street.  This pub is now in residential use.

When I was in the US Forces, I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall from 1982-1988. I lived in Newmarket, right next door to the Jockey Club on the High Street. The Butchers was my local, although a bit distant from my house. It was my local because my best friends owned The Vicarage, Exning and since I spent most of my free time with them, it was also the usual times I could go to the pub.
The landlord was a great guy named Don. The pub had a fantastic local clientele, all very friendly folks and quite accepting of the Yank who had invaded their local. I have many fond memories of getting bladdered and being the fruit machine king. Always enjoyed participating in quiz night on Fridays, and enjoying a lovely dinner a couple times a week. Thanks to the warm welcome I had there, my time in UK remain some of my best memories in my life.
