The White Lyon was situated at 3 Church Street.
This pub is now in mixed retail/commercial use. |
|
Grade II Listed bistro with a 16th
century core and late 19th or early 20th century front. Currently (2017)
Lemon Tree Bistro it has previously been a Co-operative Wholesale Society
Shop, Rossini's Restaurant, Bulstrodes (mid 1990s-2000) and the White
Lyon/Lion Public House (possibly formerly the Lion Hotel). CAMRA suggests
the White Lion in Church Street opened pre-1686 and closed post 1912 and
quotes references to the pub in the Ipswich Journal in 1742, 1744 and 1749
although no mention is made there of the location. Searching directories
from 1839 no mention is made of a White Lion, listing only the Crown and
Anchor formerly on the opposite side of Crown & Anchor Lane. It is likely
therefore the White Lion was closed prior to 1839. |
