Marquis Of Cornwallis

The Marquis Of Cornwallis was situated at 16 Old Foundry Road. This pub closed in 1954.

From 1987 to 2011 this building housed the Ipswich TUC Unemployed Workers' Centre, later renamed Ipswich Community Resource Centre, and a photo of it in its earlier role as a public house was kept on display on one of notice boards. An elderly woman visited one day and entertained us with her childhood memories when her uncle had been the landlord of the Marquis of Cornwallis. She had been afraid to go upstairs as her uncle had a stuffed crocodile mounted over the landing. We thought it would be great to preserve this detail of the building's history but painting a crocodile mural above the narrow twisting staircase proved too great a challenge. The ICRC relocated to Black Horse Lane and evolved into the Chapman Centre a few years later; leaving 16 Old Foundry Road to reincarnate as a beauty parlour.
