George Ramsdale 1960/1966 I lived in Withersdale 1960-3. The landlords were Reg Smy and his wife Nora. The regulars there were all Suffolk folk, They were a wonderful crowd of people. Reg drove for British Rail during the day and was a active member of the Labour party. As I recall the pub was a Steward and Patterson house and was sold for £2000!! Reg became landlord at The Grey hound at Tibbenham and then the Railway Tavern at Harleston.
Sue Fothergill 1957/1964 The Cross was run by my Grandparents Reg & Nora Smy. I was born in Withersdale, but my family lived in Derbyshire, but we'd spend every summer at the pub. My grandmother occasionally did B & B. There was no running hot water other than the kitchen, and only had outdoor toilets. Stewart & Patterson (the brewers) decided that it would cost far too much to modernise, so in 1965 my Grandparents moved to Tibenham to run the Greyhound.
