Duke Of Cambridge

The Duke Of Cambridge opened in 1857 on an area of land that originally been part of Ash Common. The pub closed in 1907 and more recently the building has been used for selling motorbikes and spares.

My great-great grandmother Rebecca Wilks (nee Pinder), was widowed, and remarried in middle age one Alfred Walker (a widower and formerly a soldier in the East Indies). She had several children and he had one son John. In the 1871 census for Ash, Surrey, at 53 Ash Vale, Duke of Cambridge, Alfred is listed as a Beer House Keeper. A large number of family members were living there and next door as lodgers. However, in that same year it appears they emigrated to Canada, as their names are found on a passenger list. They included Wilks, Dagwell and Walker. I don't know how long they lived there, except that one or two children were born there around the time of the census.
