The Tamworth Arms was situated at 62 Tamworth Road. This pub was closed down in 2015 due to drug dealings. Due to be converted into flats.

I remember the Tamworth Arms very well in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I am sorry to learn that it has closed. I never saw any signs of drug dealing there, but perhaps it began later than the years in which I would occasionally have a drink with friends there.

My grandparents lived at number 4 Drayton Road, a detached house also called Drayton Cottage and this house was just a couple of hundred yards from the Tamworth Arms. I was born in this house in October 1953 and my grandparents lived there till it was demolished (in the late seventies or early eighties if I remember correctly). My grand parents and my mum and dad regularly had a drink in the Tamworth, my gran's brother Les lived virtually next door to it in Tamworth Road so he was another family member who enjoyed a pint in the bar there and I think there were many others of the family who lived nearby. I remember that the landlord was Tom Musgrove and it was a Youngs pub. I grew up with my parents and brother in Woodmansterne but were always visiting Croydon and I loved staying with my grandparents. I think I must have had a few drinks in there when I was old enough but I moved to Peterborough in 1979 when I was married and my grandparents had moved into an old peoples flat in South Croydon so they never went back to the Tamworth. I also recall they sometimes had a drink in the Eagle. It's sad to read the Tamworth has closed, and I have not been back to Croydon in many years and I probably wouldn't recognise the place now.

My dad used to drink in there every Wednesday. His name is Tony Ford and used to be a well known builder around Croydon. His drinking and work friends are and were, Micky Hersey, jimmy Hersey, Johnny Hassle to name a few. My uncle used to go there sometimes and was an England international dart player. His name was Gene Raymond and was well known around the Croydon darts network. This time frame is 1970’s up until 1990.
