The Wheatsheaf was situated at 37-39 High Street. This grade-II listed pub closed in 1974 and is now in retail use.

I found this while researching my family tree:

THE LONDON GAZETTE, JULY 2, 1867.

Surrey. Mr Hullah has been appointed by the Master of the Rolls to sell by auction, at the New Auction Rooms, Masons' Hall, Basinghall-street, London, on Monday, the 8th day of July, 1867, at twelve for one o'clock, in one lot. pursuant to an Order of the High Court of Chancery, made on the 20th day of February, 1867, in the matter of the estate of John Maybank. late of Dorking, in the county of Surrey, Wine and Spirit Merchant, deceased:— The lease and goodwill, with possession, together with the furniture, fixtures, licenses, and effects (as per inventory) of the Wheatsheaf Inn, situate at Dorking, in the county of Surrey, with stabling and large garden. The premises comprise—on the second floor, three bed-rooms; first floor, a sitting-room and four bed-rooms; ground floor, a commercial room, bar, bar parlour, public parlour, tap-room, and two soldiers'-rooms over. Basement very extensive, lofty cellarage, and two ranges of natural arched vaults of even temperature both in summer and winter. In the rear of the premises is a three-quarter plant brewery, store-room, granary, and brewhouse-yard ; a billiard-room and one other room over the coach-house; a seven-stall stable, with loft over; coach-house and harness-room; a covered skittleground; and a large productive garden, with passage at end, leading to Church-street. The whole of the premises are held under a lease, the term of which will expire at Christmas, 1872, at the yearly rent of £110. The lessee covenants to insure against fire, in £1000.) The premises are situate in the centre of the town of Dorking, in the High-street, and are distant about a mile from the two railway stations. Particulars and conditions may be had of Mr. J. C. The Bankruptcy Act, 1869. In the County Court of Surrey, holden at Croydon. In the Matter of a Bankruptcy Petition against John Pimlott Brearley, of the Wheatsheaf Dorking, in the county of Surrey, Licensed Victualler. UPON the hearing of this Petition this day, and upon proof satisfactory to the Court of the debt of the Petitioner, and of the trading and of the act or acts of the Bankruptcy alleged to have been committed by the said John Pimlott Brearley, having been given, it is ordered that the said

John Pimlott Brearley be, and he is hereby, adjudged bankrupt.—Given under the Seal of the Court this 21st day of February, 1870. By the Court, W. H. Rowland, Registrar.

The First General Meeting of the creditors of the said John Pimlott Brearley is hereby summoned to be held at the Town hall, Croydon, in the county of Surrey, on the 8th day of March, 1870, at two o'clock in the afternoon, and that the Court has ordered the bankrupt to attend thereat for examination, and to produce thereat a statement of his affairs as required by the statute. Until the appointment of a Trustee all persons having in their possession any of the effects of the bankrupt must deliver them, and all debts due to the bankrupt must be paid, to the Registrar. Creditors must forward their Proofs of Debts to the Registrar.

I used to lease the shop next door in the 80's. The Wheatsheaf was then a bookshop and the owner showed me the cock fighting pit under the building. My shop had a tunnel carved from the sandstone under the basement stretching for about 25yards before ending abruptly.

Listed building details:
Timber-framed building with plastered front. 2 gables. 2 storeys, and attic in north-eastern gable. 2 windows. Tiled roof. Modern public house front. Door flanked by fluted pilasters, with rectangular fanlight with margin lights over. Door with 6 flush panels. At the western end, passageway through the ground floor with ceiling beams visible above it. Double wooden doors at entrance. Yard of Inn extends about 50 ft behind, along west side of building. Old cobblestones; mounting block.
