The Rising Sun was situated on
Cobham Road and has now been
redeveloped for housing.
This was the other side of the road from
the earlier pub and replaced it in the
1930s. |

I remember as a small child being
taken to regularly to the Rising Sun, as it had lovely gardens and Pin ball
machines located outside under some arches to the left of the building. I
also believe it had a separate Off licence. This must have been around the
1960’s. The design of the pub was the same as The Bell in Fetcham. |

This stood on the west corner of the T-junction
of Cobham Road with Leatherhead Road. It was built in the 1930s to replace
the much older cottage pub of the same name across the road. It was a
imposing two-storey and relatively long curved red brick building with
pavillion style wings at each end, the concave side facing the road
junction. It was a larger version of The Bell which still exists in the
village centre, and it seems to have been aimed more at passing traffic on
the main road.
In 1971 I stopped there with my first girlfriend on the way back from our
first full day out, which was to the gardens of the nearby Polesdon Lacy
house. We had sat on the lawn there, and although nothing improper had
occurred, there must have been some grass cuttings on my clothing because a
regular at the bar picked a few off with the comment that he knew what we
had been up to!
At some time after that it became a Harvester, but then closed in 2004 or
2005, and in 2006 retirement flats were built on the site, initially called
"Rising Sun Court" and later "Harroway Manor". |
