Green Man

The Green Man was situated at 93 London Road. This 18th century pub was demolished in 2008 for a supermarket development.
I only visited the pub once, in 1966. The coach carrying our school trip back from Europe made a toilet-stop there en route from Dover to the New Forest. Can't comment on its qualities as a pub, because we were all under age, and anyway the purpose of the visit was to unload liquid, rather than take on more... But I have never forgotten "the Green Man in Guildford" (Burpham was not anywhere on my radar), because I got locked in the loo there. Couldn't get the door to open. Fortunately there was a chair in the corner, which the other girls passed in over the door to me, and they stood by to catch me as I climbed over the top to freedom.
We left the chair. For all I know it may have been still there in 2008 when the pub came down... Should have been worth a Blue Plaque at the very least. How dare they demolish such a historic site!

I am from Paraguay and I lived in England nearly two years, near The Green Man in Burpham, Guildford. I was very sad to learn that the pub might be demolished. I used to go with my family there since it was one of the few pubs which allowed children, since it had more of a family oriented environment

I used to live in Bushy Hill estate about 20 minutes walk from this pub, I went to George Abbot School nearby. My Mum and Dad used to drink at this pub occasionally. I remember being given Cola and crisps and sitting in the patio garden outside. The inside was smoky, dark, huge and scary to a 10 year old! Later in my teens I used to go to Chelsea FC games at Stamford Bridge and we used to have dinner or drinks here on the way back with the families. Later again in my early twenties, I used to bring my Mum and little sister here for drinks and lovely times. I have sketchy memories of a building next to the pub called the Pavilion Rooms or something, a function room. It was quite big and grand to me as a youngster. The pub was a familiar local landmark and though things change, I’m sad it closed, part of my childhood and earlier years.
