The Bull Hotel was situated at 41
North Street.
The first known innkeeper was
Thomas Williamson in 1798. The Bull was owned by the Start family in the
C19th, who also owned the Dukes Head and at one point the Kings Head and a
brewery in North Street. In the early C20th a large room in the pub was hung
with portraits of Derby winners. The forecourt of the Bull became a town
meeting place, with the Suffragettes and political parties expounding their
views and town celebrations and bonfires held on the site.
Latterly the Bull was owned by the Friary Brewery, Guildford. Their licence
was transferred to The New Bull when
it was built in 1925 on the opposite side of the road. The Old Bull was
demolished and gas showrooms built on the site. These have also now been
demolished. The site is now occupied by car parking and landscaping to a new
office block to the north. |
