The Swan Hotel was situated at 22
High Street.
The Swan dated back to at least
the C17th when it was owned by the Goldman family. It may have incorporated
the town’s medieval market house. It continued in their ownership until 1713
when it was bought by Edmund Toye who’s family had been tenant innkeepers.
In the C19th and early C20th the Swan was owned by William, then George and
later Emily Moore. The Assembly Rooms at the Hotel were the most prestigious
in the town. The Swan was the town’s main coaching inn until the 1860s.
There were 8 coaches daily to London, Dorking, Guildford, Horsham, Bognor
and Worthing running daily, owned by William Chapman and B.W. Horne. The inn
provided post horses, carriages, stabling and lock up coach houses.
The Swan Brewery was established by George Moore at the rear of the hotel in
1859. The business continued until 1921. Some of its buildings survived
until 1979.
The Swan closed in September 1936 and was demolished and a 3 story crescent
of shops and offices in neoclassical style built on its site. They remain in
commercial use.
In 1979 work started on building the town’s new shopping centre, the Swan
Centre. It was built partly on the former site of the Swan Brewery to the
north of that of the Hotel. It was opened in 1982. |
