The Jolliffe Arms was situated on
London Road North. Also known as the Shepherds Pen, this pub closed in the
1990s. |

“The old Hylton Arms that served the
turn of lime-burners when they wanted to slake their thirst, has been been
ornately rebuilt in the modern-Elizabethan Public House Style, alongside the
road to catch the custom of the world at large and is named the Joliffe
Arms. Both signs reflect the ownership of Mestham, for Joliffe has long been
the family name of the Holders of the modern Barony of Hylton. Formerly
‘Jolly’ , it was presumably too bacchanalian and not sufficiently
aristocratic so was changed to Joliffe. |

The Croydon Paragon Cycle club used
this pub as their Country Headquarters in 1900 & 1901 and possible until
1914. My Great Grandfather was a committee member and I still have some of
his memotabilia, but no photos unfortunately |

I’ve just stumbled across your website whilst
researching a long lost rifle range that used to be behind the Jolliffe
Arms. . I used to drink and eat in the Jolliffe Arms in Merstham during the
late 70’s early 80’s after college. I think the landlord their at the time
was Ted and Hilda? and after that, Bill Clements and his wife Vera. Seems a
long time ago now. |
