The Hole In The Wall was situated at 3 Park
Road. This pub was previously known as The Park Road Tavern, closing in 2006.
To prevent it being turned into flats, next door neighbour, David
Attenborough bought the pub, annexed it onto his house and turned it into
his library. |

In 1879,
Kate Webster murdered her employer in a house adjacent to The Hole in the
Wall. Next morning she drank gin there and later buried her victim’s head at
the rear of the pub (discovered eventually by David Attenborough, the
property’s new owner.) The following night she carried a trunk containing
the dismembered remains down Mount Ararat Road — past #22 where Percy later
lived — and heaved it over Richmond Bridge into the River Thames! The
six-day trial at The Old Bailey caused such a sensation it was attended by
Prince Gustaf of Sweden. Webster was convicted of murder and executed at
Wandsworth prison. |
