The Southampton was situated on St Marks Road.
This pub closed in 1988. It had bands playing there at the weekends but
became a bikers pub. |

Fantastic pub, usually too drunk to
remember much but Cry no More played there and wonderful times with
bikey friends! |

Absolutely loved this place. So
many excellent bands, Steve Warley, Steve Waller, Steve Simpson, London
Slim, the Monday band, etc, etc, and certainly not forgetting the amazing
Cry No More. Also remember publicans Bob and Betty. Never been anything
like it since. Many of us shed a few tears when turning up to find it
closed (several days before it was meant to). Great pub |

I was the licensee there and
started the bands in early 1983. Happiest days of my life. The pub was
under Winthrop House which closed in 1985 but the brewery had a 99 year
lease and refused to close the Southampton until ( unfortunately) they
were offered a sum they couldn’t refuse. It closed on Oct 8th 1988
Contrary to gossip there was very few clientele problems because with a
wife and 3 children I would not have stayed. The venue was unique . |

I was the bass player with London Slim. We
played there every two weeks on a Saturday night and had the
'distinction' of playing the last ever gig at the Southampton on
8/10/88. Bob never let on it was the last gig until everyone else had
left the pub - we speculated that he didn't want the place wrecked...
and we may well have been right! |

I was in London for a work course. As a 20yo
it seemed like a huge adventure. I was on my own for the 1st time and
staying in lodgings in Lovelace Gardens. I went to this pub about 4
times. Lively atmosphere! My only gripe was that 'Time' was so strict
that pints were taken out of your hand! This did amuse me as that wasn't
the case in Cardiff! |
