Black Horse

Picture source: National Brewery Heritage Trust

The Black Horse was situated at 220 Seaside.
My great grandfather, Mark Dann, was landlord here from sometime in the first decade of the 20th century until he retired, I think, in the mid 1920s. The brewery (Beards?) then rented him a nearby house at 4 Willowfield Square until he died in 1949 after which his daughter who had been looking after him (my grandmother) continued living there until the late 1950s. My late mother told me that in the old days it was very much a fishermen's pub.

This pub was run in the 1980's by Al and Joan Albon. They raised their family there and were the backbone of the local community. I'm not sure how long they were there but their pub was a friendly, busy place with two dart teams. They were lovely people, loved and respected by all. I will always remember them. 28/10/2016 is their joint funeral, as they passed within days of each other. Sadly the pub is no more, just a block of flats.
