The Swan Hotel was destroyed by enemy bombing on 23/05/1943. About 25 people were killed that day which was the largest loss of life in a single day in Hastings due to air raids in World War II. As the Swan was hit at lunchtime most of the 25 were in the pub. The site was not rebuilt on after the war and is a memorial garden to those who lost their lives in Hastings during World War II.
