The Sussex Arms was situated on Cuckfield Road.
This pub was a 19th century brewery tap and is now occupied by a print and
design company. The Sussex Arms part of the building and the Brewery
(now Brewery Mews) are all now residential accommodation in keeping with the
original structures that have been maintained. |

My mother was teetotal and my father
rarely drank so I was not never taken to the pub and left outside with ‘a
glass of pop and a packet of crisps’. Back in the early 1970’s I was too
young to buy alcohol but was looking for a lunchtime drink. I knew my
grandfather used quite a few pubs, including the Lamb just up the road, so
decided to give the Lamb a miss and go to the Sussex Arms. Having taken a
big breath I went through the door, looking neither left nor right, and
ordered my pint. Relieved that I had been served I had a drink then put the
glass back on the bar. I then glanced right then left. Deep joy! The only
person there was my grandfather, a man of few words, who said, ‘Are you
alright?’ I said that I was and finished my pint quickly and left. He never
mentioned the occasion to my parents. |
