The Marine Hotel was situated on Selborne Road. |

An amusing little pub in a residential area where it seemed a surprise to
find, an idiosyncracy used to be a bar billiards table crowded into a
corner which made you use a very small cue (I used to call it a toothpick)
to make certain shots, and helped you get acquainted with the locals.

This pub closed in the mid 2000s, now
converted to flats. This pub was used by the fledgling commandos unit
based in the town in WW2 under the command of Ian Fleming, the author of
the James Bond books. These soldiers played key roles pre- and post-D Day
landings behind enemy lines in France and many lost their lives or were
wounded. Many wrote their names on a board behind the bar and it is
understood that this was rescued during the conversion. |
