Red Lion

The Red Lion was situated on New Street. This pub closed in the 1980s and became an antiques shop. It is now used as The Leconfield Restaurant & Bar.
Grade-II listed, the north (New Street) of the building is early 19th century with the west extension late 19th century. On middle Street is the oldest part of the building that is 17th century or earlier. The former inn and pub closed in the 1980s and has also been a motor hire shop, a restaurant and here Rod Wilson's Red Lion Antiques that closed in 2008. Nicola Jones refurbished the building as The Leconfield a highly rated restaurant that opened on 9th March 2011. Directory entries include, 1832 Sarah Watts, 1839 George Braby, 1851-1859 James Coombs (wine & spirit merchant), 1866 Antonio Beaublet, 1878-1890 Frederick Foard (blacksmith), 1899 Joseph Purser, 1905-1911 Alfred Purser and 1915 John Purser (farmer).

Listed building details:
Public house. L-shaped building in the angle of New Street and Middle Street. The oldest portion is the section facing Middle Street. C17 or earlier timber-framed building with some timbering and red brick infilling exposed but mostly refaced with stone rubble. Tile-hung gable. Tiled roof. Casement windows with small square panes. Two storeys. Four windows. The New Street front is early C19 with a late C19 extension at the west end. Two storeys. Three windows. Red brick. Modillion eaves cornice. Glazing bars intact. Doorway with pilasters and projecting cornice.
