In 1949, when I was 5 years old, I used
to walk from the Westergate Primary School to Aldingbourne Nurseries. This
was a journey of around 5 miles and the landmark I passed by was the Labour
in Vain Pub. Sometimes I would catch the 57 Southdown Doubledecker bus;
change at the Labour in Vain to a single decker Number 64. I also remember a
library inside a corrugated iron facade being opposite the Labour in Vain
and choosing a book to read for the week. I remember losing a book called
"Gulliver's Travels." After we moved about 5 years later, we had a letter
from the library asking me to bring it back! |
