The Greyhounds Head was situated at 29 Henley
Street. This pub is now in residential use. |
|
The Grade II listing defines this house
built around 1600 as a former inn and formally listed as Henley House. The
1945, 'A History of the County of Warwick: Volume 3: Barlichway hundred'
states that the Red Horse Inn was formerly the Greyhound's Head. The first
mention of the Greyhound occurs in 1670. However in an 1828 directory the
two inns co-existed. As 25 and 27 appear to have been the Red Horse the 1945
history must be incorrect and this was only ever the Grounds Head or Just
Greyhound in the directories I have that seem to indicate it closed early in
the 20th century. Directory entries for the Greyhound include; 1828 Samuel
Foxall; 1830-1842 Joseph Foxall; 1850 George Allwood; 1896 James Welch;
1912-1914 unable to locate.' |
