The Engine Hotel was originally known as the
Railway and was opened in 1838, the same year as the Birmingham to London
Railway. Most of the building was demolished c2005 and the site is now
occupied by the Engine Mews housing development. Part
of the original building, on the corner of Fentham Road, has been preserved
and is incorporated in Engine Mews. |

Around this time of the year in 1974, a
man called Luigi Gaeta murdered his wife in the car park of the Engine pub
in Hampton-in-Arden. If I remember correctly, the motive seems to have been
related to his wife allegedly having an affair with someone who worked at
the pub. The murder and trial featured in the Solihull News on at least two
occasions. His name is permanently etched on my brain because about a month
before he committed the awful deed, I installed a colour TV in his house in
Solihull. |
