The Foxhunter

The Foxhunter was situated on The Square and closed down following a fire.
There’s a burnt-out pub in Snitterfield
that rots and festers still -
Her rafters blackened, soot-annealed
Her cellar swamped and ill

Her windows boarded, hide a sin
good drinkers all abhor:
A pub deserted, drained within
though a name still o’er the door.

“licensed to sell… on or off the premises….”
A supposed Licensee
who cares not for Her nemesis,
or the likes of you and me.

David Watson
This pub has now been demolished.

The Fox as it was fondly known was an Ansells Brewery, Aston Cross, Birmingham owned pub
My parents, Stan & Connie Jones, kept The Fox on a tenant basis in the mid to late 1970's. It consisted of a bar which was situated on side of the pub that faced the main road a small comfortable lounge. I have also found out that the Fox was extended later after Mom & Dad left, and sadly it's now burnt out and I understand demolished.
The Fox was a lovely, lively part of the local community in Snitt. Theme nights were held some weekends including a Tramps night, when Mom & Dad put on faggots and mash on the menu. Another time they had a clowns and fairies night, the ladies dressed up as clowns and the men dressed up as the fairies, I remember one regular customer used to wear toe - tector boots for work, he sprayed them silver put on a long wig and borrowed a nylon nightie of his wife's and walked down to the pub dressed like that. Another night was cowboys and indians. Everyone used to join in on these nights and have a really good time. It was also popular with caravanners from nearby sites.
The pub was used in an episode of the old soap Crossroads. Chris Tarrant used to use the pub frequently usually using the little lounge.

Amanda Hall 1970s My grandparents owned this Ansells pub Stan & Connie Jones. As a young child I have lots of very fond memories staying weekends with my parents, Uncle Rob , Aunty Ve and my cousin Alison. Not to mention Butch the dog. We use to entertain the locals such as snowy the farmer and I also have pics of visits from Chris Tarrant.
Lynne Burke 1950s/1960s My Auntie and Uncle ran the pub then known as The New Inn Winn & Joe Edkins. I would stay there during the summer. Very fond memories. Joan, Christine, and Terry my cousins. Sadly no photos but it looked just like your photo. Very sad to think of a fire and then demolished. Very fond memories of Snitterfield.
