White Lion

The White Lion was situated at 8 Gloucester Street. This pub was present in 1939 and is now in residential use.

In 1703, the pub became the scene of the first death in the UK caused by a tiger. Hannah Tynnoy, barmaid at the White Lion, was mauled to death as the tiger ,that was at the pub as part of a travelling menagerie, managed to escape from its cage. Hannah had been warned not to agitate the tiger prior to her death. She is now buried in the local churchyard.
