The Shoulder Of Mutton was situated on Bridge
Street. This pub was demolished in 1962. |

I found this in my late father’s journal:
“My great grandfather Joseph Humphries was invalided out of the Marines
after the Crimean war. He drew his gratuity at Portsmouth and made his way
home to Milford in Somerset. He stayed overnight in the shoulder of mutton
pub in Salisbury and took a shine to the bar maid. He proposed marriage, was
accepted and left his gratuity with her, promising to return to marry her -
which he did". |
