Raven Inn

The will of William Houghton of September 1760 left 'the messuage or tenement called The Raven' to William Carter and Joseph Oldham, Hop merchants. Berrows Worcester Journal then shows Sarah Davis as the Licensee of the Raven in 1765 which was situated directly across the Bewdley-Kidderminster Road from the Black Boy. The entry refers to "Widow Davis at the Raven Inn Wribbenhall" and a bay gelding left there by John Lewis. Mrs Davis wanted it known that if the horse was not collected it would be sold to recover its stabling expenses.
In 1777 the Raven was advertised as: "To be let and entered in upon Lady day next, The Raven Inn situated at Wribbenhall nr Bewdley...a house of Reputation and great business, together with land thereto belonging. The tenant may be accommodated with an agreeable amount of stock." The new licensee was Cornelius Hyde a warehouseman and publican, formerly of The Talbot across the river in Bewdley as shown soon after:
"Cornelius Hyde begs to return unfeigned thanks to his Friends for favours conferred in the warehouse business and at the Talbot Inn and acquaint them and the public in general that for their more commodious Accommodation he hath genteely fitted up and entered the above Inn whereby Assiduity and a strict Attention to please he hopes to meet their patronage."
The Innings Lane Turnpike Trust held meetings at the Raven from March 1777 and continued there until June 1778. Customers of The Raven could enjoy such activities as cockfighting, a common 'sport' of the time. Berrows Worcester JournaI of Feb 18th 1779 advertises: "a Main of Cocks" to be fought at the Raven Inn, Wribbenhall between the Gentlemen of Shopshire and the Gentlemen of Worcestershire."
