The Fermor Arms was situated on Church Street. A very narrow pub, almost like a railway carriage, this pub was closed c1980.

I was a customer here between about 1956 and about 1960. It was not my local by any means but I would walk from my home to the Fermor with my Mate, Dave Wood (where are you now, Woody?). Often, we would go on to a dance at the Winter Gardens. For some reason, I seem to have supped more pints of Pedigree in this pub than in any other. It wasn't exactly 'spit and sawdust' but it was quite primitive. The toilets were in the cellar and the stairs down were very steep (steeper when you'd had a few!). I can't remember the governor's name but I seem to remember him dying and his wife taking over and running it very strictly. Her name was Lydia. The Fermor was unusual in only having a six-day licence. It was closed on Sundays, due to its proximity to the Priory Church. Anyone know who or what the Fermor was named after?

As a student apprentice at the Royal Radar Establishment in maybe '59/60, colleagues and I frequented "The Fermor" primarily for the very cost effective effects of the raw scrumpie or cider from the wood that was available there. I still recall the Landlord warning us lads of the dangers of scrumpie, even as he poured the pints.

Was my local for some years, run by Tommy Southgate and his wife Lydia. It was also my Grandparents local, Ted and Min Norton. After Tommy moved on it was taken over by Wally and his wife Daisy, who later moved to the Fir Tree in Malvern Link.. It had a 6 day licence as it was built on church land. Sundays i drank in the Red Lion, up the hill.
