The Portobello was situated on Quest Hills Road.
This pub has now been demolished, with flats built on the site. |

I must have been one of the last
customers here, the Saturday night before it unexpectedly closed. It was a
Bank's house, basic, & the place to go for your duty free. Was raided by the
Customs once, & the alleged guilty parties escaped through a window & had it
away in their van.
Went down for my pre Sunday Lunch pint, found it locked up. I knew the last
landlord ( a Scottish bloke, well known for creating Sunday night curries
for his regulars). Turned out he had come to open the pub, found all the
locks changed, & a condemned notice on the door. The pub was apparently
owned by a business who decided the site would be better used for housing. &
used a crack in the chimney as an excuse. It was soon demolished, & the
Portobello apartments built. I recently had a chat with one of the
residents, who was fascinated. |
