The Fitzwilliam Inn was situated at 24
Sackville Street. |
|
Built in 1880, The Fitzwilliam Inn
nicknamed ‘The Fitz’ was a large three storey pub situated on Sackville
Street, Barnsley. The ground floor of the premises was the bar area, the
first and second floor were living quarters and the lower floor was used as
the cellar to store stock. The pub closed in 2005 due to decreased demand in
trade.
The building never served as a pub again and remained shut. Following the
long period of emptiness the site suffered major damage due to squatters and
general neglect of the building structure. On numerous occasions Barnsley
Council received plans to demolish the building and replace it with
apartments. However, these were rejected due to concerns that the sites
elevated position would cause privacy issues to the houses on Coalby Walk.
Recently in December 2016, Barnsley Council’s Planning Department received
another plan to demolish the former pub and erect a 3/4 storey building
containing 12 studio apartments and 2 two bedroom apartments. This plan was
accepted but work is not yet started. |
