Talbot Hotel

The Talbot Hotel was situated on Bradford Road.

My great great grandfather’s brother, whose name was Stephen Pickuls (or Pickles), was the owner of a portable theatre, mainly fairground entertainment, which travelled around the North West and West Yorkshire in the mid 19th century. In the winter months he would settle. For a few months at the beginning of 1870 he rented a wooden building in Batley, which adjoined the Talbot Hotel. He put on performances there and it was named “The New Theatre”. There was later a dispute between Stephen and the landlord of the Talbot, which ended up in Court, but neither party seemed to win the case. Subsequent to that he gave his address as the Victoria Inn Pudsey.
