Prince Of Wales

The Prince Of Wales was situated at 91 Harrogate Road. This pub closed in 2016 and has now been demolished.   According to an early 20th century ordnance survey street map of the area it had a public toilet (urinal only possibly) in the curve of the perimeter wall of the car park.
I was evacuated to Worthing,Sussex in Sept1939 and when they thought the south coast could be invaded I returned to London aged 11.
As my mother and all her family had been born in Bradford my mother, sister and I went to stay at The Prince of Wales in Harrogate Road where my uncle was the landlord. His name was Laurence
Boyden, his wife was Doris Boyden and they had a son Kenneth. After a couple of weeks my mother and sister returned to London but I stayed on with my aunt and uncle.
I remember that the Prince of Wales was surrounded by a high wall and when facing the building there was a flight of steps to the left that led to a road. If I remember correctly the tap room contained tables and chairs and two dart boards; dominoes was frequently played. I believe that the Prince was a beer and wine house only and that the bar had three or four pumps selling various beers. Beer was four and a half old pennies per gill. When you came out of the tap room at the front of the building and turned left, and left again, there were two of three steps which led into a lobby. On the left was the lounge and to the right the snug. The lounge contained a piano for a sing along and I recall a chap called Bert Brewan who when on leave from the airforce would sing songs which always included ‘Begin the Beguine.’ Bert was very popular.
The snug was always warm and cosy as was the rest of the Prince. There was a large cellar where my uncle used to tap the barrels. Laurence and Doris Boyden were popular hosts and on occasions held ‘knees- up’ in the tap room and I know that a lady called Emily also worked in the pub but I can’t recall her name. After they left the Prince my aunt and uncle lived in Undercliffe Lane, and Laurence became a Councillor. He loved rugby and was also president of Fagley cricket club. I remember him being a great character. Eventually they both moved to Morecambe. Kenneth their son spent all of his married life living in Leeds Road,Fagley and died in October 2019 I can clearly remember the layout of The Prince of Wales including the wash house at the back, and
over the cobbles to Jowetts fish and chip shop and Bates, the library and sweet shop. I returned to London when I was 13. There was also a pub on the opposite corner which I think was called the Wellington
June Bellenie (August 2021)
